Part 1 of the four part TROY TrojanVision Series: How Troy University brings live broadcast training to life with NewBlue Captivate and Fusion.
TROY TrojanVision’s control room runs like a professional newsroom, but every show is produced by students. This installment shows how Troy University’s team uses NewBlue Captivate and NewBlue Fusion to build and run three live newscasts a day, manage graphics and data under tight turnarounds, and give students real-world broadcast experience from day one.
At Troy University’s TROY TrojanVision, live television isn’t a simulation — it’s the curriculum. From reporting and directing to running cameras and graphics, students operate the newsroom from top to bottom, producing three full live newscasts every day: Midday, Global, and Nightly.
As part of the Hall School of Journalism and Communication, TROY TrojanVision serves as the hands-on training ground for Troy’s broadcast journalism degree — giving students a real newsroom experience that builds both technical skills and storytelling confidence.
It’s an ambitious pace even for a professional station — and the graphics behind those broadcasts are powered by NewBlue Captivate, giving TROY TrojanVision’s students the speed, reliability, and creative control to make every show look polished and professional.
“We do three live televised newscasts produced and run entirely by students,” says Jeff Herring, Executive Producer of TROY TrojanVision. “We don’t know of any other program in the country doing that — and we love it.”
Earlier this year, TROY TrojanVision upgraded from a Broadcast Pix system that used an earlier version of Captivate, called Titler Live, to a fully integrated modern workflow. Today, Fusion, Captivate, and ATEM Constellation work in sync with Bitfocus Companion and Stream Deck to power their on-air graphics. The result is a reliable, professional setup that gives students hands-on experience with the same tools used across the broadcast industry.
“We already knew how easy it was to work with the NewBlue system and how amazing and powerful it could be,” says Herring.
Each afternoon, students arrive ready to build that day’s shows from scratch — rundowns, graphics, titles, data, and weather. With Captivate, they can import elements directly from Photoshop, After Effects, and Google Sheets, or design their own visuals using Captivate Designer.
“NewBlue is able to take that After Effects presentation, pull it in, make our graphics just pop and make them look amazing!” says Herring.
The workflow is fast, intuitive, and flexible. Lower thirds pull live from spreadsheets, titles update on the fly, and even end-of-show interview graphics can be created during the broadcast. Captivate handles the imports so efficiently that operators never need to break the flow of production.
Collaboration has also been a key part of TROY TrojanVision’s success. Herring and his team work closely with NewBlue Support to explore new workflows and creative techniques that fit their demanding schedule. Together, they’ve tuned Captivate’s setup, refined Shot Control use, and optimized project management for multi-show production. “That partnership has helped us surpass our own expectations,” Herring says.
“Those tabs and Shot Control were game-changers. We can step through an entire rundown from one surface, across shows, without reloading projects — crucial when you’ve got 20 minutes between programs.”
Behind the scenes, TROY TrojanVision’s studio runs on NewBlue Fusion, providing the reliable SDI infrastructure that ties everything together. Fusion powers the delivery, Captivate drives the visuals, and together they help students learn and perform at a professional standard — every day, three times a day.
TROY TrojanVision’s newsroom looks and runs like a professional studio, but what makes it exceptional is who’s behind the controls — students learning to think, adapt, and perform live. And for them, Captivate isn’t just another graphics system — it’s the foundation that makes professional-level storytelling possible every single day.
