Part 4 | The Future of Broadcast — Collaboration, Creativity, and the Next Generation of Storytellers

Part 4 of the four part TROY TrojanVision Series: How Troy University’s program continues to evolve live production education for the modern newsroom.

The final chapter looks at TROY TrojanVision’s 50-year evolution and what it means for the next generation of broadcasters. It highlights how NewBlue Captivate and Fusion support a collaborative control-room culture, prepare students for fast-paced newsroom jobs, and extend a legacy where technology, creativity, and alumni success keep pushing the program forward.

At Troy University’s TROY TrojanVision, the next generation of broadcasters is already shaping what’s to come. Each day, students produce professional-grade live shows that reach across campus and beyond — combining storytelling, teamwork, and cutting-edge technology. For Jeff Herring, Executive Producer of TROY TrojanVision, the newsroom is both a training ground and a living laboratory. What began fifty years ago as a single daily broadcast has evolved into a full-scale operation producing three daily shows, global interviews, and live event coverage.

“We’ve been doing this for fifty years,” says Jeff Herring, Executive Producer of TROY TrojanVision. “But every year, it feels new again — because the technology evolves, and so do our students.”

A Legacy of Innovation

TROY TrojanVision’s legacy is built on fifty years of evolution, and that spirit of progress continues today. What started as a small student broadcast has grown into a professional operation that continually adapts to new tools and technologies while staying true to its educational mission.

That same mindset led the team to their most recent upgrade. After experimenting with Captivate software, they discovered how much more powerful their workflow could become with Fusion hardware.

“Some of the aspects that worked well for us started with just looking at Captivate software,” says Herring. “But when we discovered Fusion hardware — with two channels out that included the SDIs — we realized how much easier our production could be.”

“That combination of Fusion hardware with Captivate software was a win-win. It gave us exactly what we needed to produce professional-grade broadcasts effortlessly.”

With Fusion managing two SDI channels — one for video and one for key — TROY TrojanVision’s team can handle complex live graphics without compromise. From lower thirds and animations to layered effects and transitions, every visual is clean, consistent, and ready for air.

Where Collaboration Fuels Growth

TROY TrojanVision’s control room is where collaboration becomes second nature. Every broadcast relies on communication between anchors, directors, and technical operators — a rhythm that mirrors professional television. Students learn to anticipate, adapt, and trust one another under real-time pressure.

The integration of NewBlue Captivate and Fusion has amplified that teamwork. With intuitive control and flexible graphics integration, students can focus on creative decisions instead of troubleshooting — learning how production teams in the industry coordinate visuals, data, and timing live on air.

Learning at Broadcast Speed

Producing three live newscasts a day is more than a schedule — it’s a philosophy. Students learn to make decisions at broadcast speed: balancing content, visuals, and timing while managing live feeds. It’s the kind of training that prepares them for real-world newsroom environments, where deadlines never pause.

That approach has led to remarkable outcomes. TROY TrojanVision alumni consistently step into professional roles ready to contribute on day one, often receiving job offers before graduation. Herring attributes that success to giving students the responsibility — and the trust — to operate as professionals early on.

Looking Ahead

As technology continues to advance, TROY TrojanVision remains committed to evolving alongside it. New features, integrations, and storytelling tools arrive every semester, giving students constant opportunities to innovate.

For Herring and his team, the mission is simple: combine creativity, collaboration, and cutting-edge technology to prepare storytellers who are ready for anything. TROY TrojanVision’s future looks bright — not because of any single tool, but because of the people learning to use them with imagination and purpose.

As TROY TrojanVision continues to evolve, it stands as a shining example of what happens when technology, education, and creativity intersect. Programs like this don’t just teach broadcast journalism — they redefine it for the next generation.

We’d like to extend our sincere thanks to Jeff Herring, Executive Producer of TROY TrojanVision, Aaron Taylor, Director of Television, and Paige Ray, TV Production Coordinator for sharing the incredible work their students are producing and for showcasing how NewBlue Fusion and Captivate play a part in that journey. We look forward to supporting them all and the TROY TrojanVision program as they continue to innovate, inspire, and push the boundaries of what’s possible in live broadcasting.
